THE WONDERFUL WILDLIFE OF THE SEYCHELLES

[/fusion_title][fusion_text]

We can quite boldly state that the Seychelles is not probably top on your list for Africa’s top wildlife destinations. It’s not even on ours! But a closer look into the islands that make up this idyllic and enchanting archipelago reveals a myriad of incredible wildlife.

You will discover that the Seychelles is a living museum of natural history – a sanctuary for some of the planet’s rarest flora and fauna. The white-sand beaches, clear warm waters and tropical forests are home to beautiful and mesmerising wildlife.

Amphibians & Reptiles

Thirteen amphibian species call the Seychelles home. This includes the tiny, endemic Seychelles tree frog, which grows to an adorable 76 mm (3-inches) in length. They maybe small but they’re very distinctive looking – oversized eyes and bright green! Look for them in the shady, damp forests.

There are also around thirty species of land-dwelling reptiles to be found on the Seychelles. Of course, you cannot leave without seeing the iconic Aldabra Giant Tortoise. The Aldabra Giant Tortoise is one of the largest tortoise species on Earth and endemic to the Aldabra Atoll of the Seychelles. These ancient creatures can weigh over 400kg and grow to approximately 1.3 metres in length. Most of these tortoises live between 80 and 120 years, but some have lived over a whopping 250 years!

A tip to Cousin Island will show you one of nature’s miracles – hawksbill turtles laying their eggs on the beach.

Birds

The Seychelles is made up of a number of islands, all offering unique and wonderful experiences. One of these islands is known as Bird Island, and if the name doesn’t give it away, yes, it’s an island full of birds.

Bird Island is home to thousands of colourful tropical birds and over 20 bird species – a paradise for ornithologists. Tranquil, beautiful and untouched – it is a true retreat from our busy world. It is essentially a huge bird colony, with massive numbers of seabird present and calling throughout the year. Bird Island is home to the Sooty Tern Colony, the Barred Ground Doves, the Greater Crested Terns, the Noddies, the Frigatebirds, Fairy Terns, White-tailed Tropicbirds, Seychelles Blue Pigeons and waders such as Grey Plovers, Curlew Sandpipers, and Ruddy Turnstones.

Marine life

Of course, the wildlife you would expect to flourish in the Seychelles is the marine life. And this could not be more true, dive below the azure waters and you will discover over 100 species of brightly coloured fish. When soaking up the sun on the beach, you might spot another odd creature – the coconut crab. These colourful crustaceans can grow up to 1 metre in length, but don’t worry, they’re quite shy around humans, if you do have a fear of crabs!

The largest of the Seychelles’ mammals are actually all marine life! You’ll be extremely lucky to spot the rare dugong, endemic to the Seychelles’ waters. Take a ride in a traditional dhow or a sunset cruise and look out for orcas, Bryde’s whale, humpback whales, and not to mention a number of dolphin species. You can also encounter them up-close on a scuba-diving expedition.
