With its striking red sand dunes contrasting against the blue sky and white salt pans, Sossusvlei is possibly Namibia’s most spectacular attraction. It is home to some of the tallest in the sand dunes in the world. These dunes, part of the Namib desert, have been formed over millions of years which bring an element of ancient wonder to the area. The dynamism of the dunes’ colours, from deep red to burnt orange and rich mauve, make for a photographer’s dream.
Sossusvlei literally translates to “dead-end marsh”, as it is the place where the dunes come together preventing the Tsauchab River from flowing any further, some 60km east of the Atlantic Ocean. However, due to the dry conditions in the Namib Desert, the river seldom flows this far and the pan remains bone-dry most years. During an exceptional rainy season the Tsauchab River fills the pan, drawing visitors from all over the world to witness this spectacular site. Photographic enthusiasts are spoilt with a glassy “lake” holding reflections of the surrounding dunes. When the pan fills it can hold water for as long as a year.
The Sossusvlei is the epitome of Namibia’s untouched desert landscape. Surrounding the area are a number of sights worth seeing. Dune 45 is the most photographed dune in the world. A climb to the top of the dune will leave you with panoramic views of the spectacular Dune Valley. Sesriem Canyon has been shaped over millions of years and is one of the few places in the area to hold water throughout the year.
Accommodation ranges from camping through to luxury lodges, but the vastness of the desert ensures an element of remoteness highlighting the true expansiveness of the area. If you’re not used to high temperatures, May to October is the best time to visit as temperatures are cooler making for an easier time exploring the dunes.

I am one of the owners of Pembury Tours and set up the company in 1996 with my husband shortly after our return from a 6-year stay in the United Kingdom, during which time I worked in London and also did a Master’s Degree in Linguistics at Cambridge University.
My principal function at Pembury Tours is ensuring that we maintain a consistently high standard of work. This means I work very closely with my tour consultants as well as my administration staff. I manage to spend about half my time tour consulting, something that I really enjoy! I love the challenge of compiling an itinerary for clients that meets all the criteria they have given me. My love of wildlife means that I especially enjoy working on safari itineraries but I also like drawing up itineraries that include a “bit of everything” for first-time visitors – Cape Town, beaches, game viewing, African culture and historical insight. As a mother with teenage children, I know the importance of looking for more adventurous activities that will keep them entertained and ensure a great family holiday. I am extremely well-travelled and particularly enjoy using my knowledge of travel to put together complex itineraries for discerning travellers.
