WALKING SAFARIS
WHAT TO WEAR
A walking safari is one of the best experiences you can have when on safari in Africa. It’s a much more immersive and insightful experience compared to a game drive. It gives you the chance to learn about and interact with the bush in a way that a game vehicle doesn’t. A guide will show you all the intricacies that make up the incredible ecology and wildlife of the African bush.
If you do choose to go on a safari bush walk (and we highly recommend that you do!) here is what we recommend you wear.
CLOTHING
Neutral colours such as browns, greys and greens work best as safari clothes. Avoid white, blue, black and bright colours. The aim is to fit in with your surroundings as much as possible (but camouflage is not necessary).
If you’re prone to sunburn or are the poor unlucky soul who always seems to attract all the mosquitoes, we recommend a long-sleeve cotton shirt. Otherwise, a cotton t-shirt that you can layer with warmer tops will work. Pack a light jacket or a fleece for warmth, it’s not always hot in the bush!
Perhaps not the most fashionable item, trousers that can zip into shorts are useful. Especially if you’re on safari during the cooler season.
When it comes to footwear, thick socks are key – nobody wants blisters. Walking shoes or hiking boots (preferably a pair that has been worn-in) will work as shoes
GEAR
You don’t want to be carrying a heavy backpack and depending on the length of your guided walk you might not need to take too much. The non-negotiables are:
- A hat
- Sunscreen (Eco-friendly and SPF 50)
- Sunglasses
- Water
- Insect repellant (Organic and chemical-free)
- Binoculars
- A camera
- Toilet paper (in case nature calls!)
