THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CAPE TOWN

[/fusion_title][fusion_text]

OUR TOP 10 THINGS TO DO

There is no place in the world quite like Cape Town, set against the backdrop of the iconic Table Mountain, there’s something special in the air.

[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” dimension_margin=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_text]

The combination of trendy restaurants, incredible weather, a rich history, adventure activities and beautiful scenery makes it a city for everyone. From its cosmopolitan city centre to the white-sand beaches and tranquil winelands, the thread of South Africa’s vibrancy runs throughout. One visit will leave you wanting to return, again and again.

There is always somewhere new to go or something new to do, but here are our top ten things to do in the Mother City.

1. Table Mountain

There’s no avoiding this one. Table Mountain is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and easily the most iconic sight in Cape Town.  It’s the perfect place for panoramic views of the city and a wonderful way to marvel at the spectacular local flora and fauna – look out for the resident ‘dassies’ (rock rabbits) and the King Protea (South Africa’s national flower). Take the cable car up, or if you’re feeling adventurous, hike to the top. Just make sure you don’t miss the last cable car and don’t hike in the dark!

2. Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Another natural wonder, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is one of the world’s greatest botanic gardens. With its setting on the slopes of Table Mountain and its plethora of indigenous flora it is a must-visit spot. It is home to over 7000 species of southern African plants and is full of little gems such as a protea garden, a canopy walkway and life-size dinosaur sculptures! In summer, there are open-air concerts by local and international artists as well as an open-air movie theatre. Pack a picnic basket, bask in the sun and enjoy this natural wonder only a short distant from the heart of the bustling city.

3. A Walking City Food Tour

There is no better way to experience a culture then through its cuisine and there is no better way to explore a city than by walking. This is the perfect way to combine the two. A walking city food tour takes you from the trendy city centre to the colourful Bo-Kaap and bustling local hangouts – giving you an immersive experience into the diversity of Cape Town’s cultures and history. Along the way you’ll get to indulge in everything from creamy pasteis de nata, to spicy samosas, dark chocolate and rooibos-infused gin.

4. A Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

The red bus tour is a must for both local and international travellers alike. It’s the perfect way to see all the sights and learn about the city with interesting and entertaining audio commentary and anecdotes. There are various options available from the city tour to the peninsula tour and the Cape Point tour. We recommend a two-day or three-day pass so that you can explore as much of the city as possible.

5. Tandem Paragliding

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or not, this adventure activity is definitely worth putting aside any aversion towards heights. Taking off from Signal Hill, tandem paragliding swops out adrenaline for a surprisingly calming flight over the city. It’s an exhilarating way to experience Cape Town from above and is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

6. Truth Coffee

Coffee culture is deeply ingrained into Cape Town’s DNA. So much so that it is home to the world’s best coffee shop. Truth Coffee is a steampunk coffee shop that offers a truly extraordinary and unique culinary experience. The coffee is strong and rich and perfectly accompanied by an assortment of sweet and tart pastries. It’s an experience like no other and highly recommended for both coffee and non-coffee drinkers.

7. Boulders Beach

A short drive away from Cape Town’s cosmopolitan cafés and green natural surrounds takes you to Boulders Beach. Home to one of Africa’s only penguin colonies, it is one of the only places in the world where you can swim with the penguins. These little creatures can only be described as adorable and a little bit weird. It’s a wonderful way to spend a few hours watching these waddling little birds as well as contributing to their conservation.

8. Robben Island

Nelson Mandela spent 27 years here fighting for democracy in South Africa making this another iconic South African destination. Visiting Robben Island is a fantastic way to learn about a significant era of South African history. It is an insightful look into South Africa’s past and how far the country has come since.
