In this post, we’ll discover a South African hidden gem shared by Heidi.

“My favourite part of our country has to be God’s Window in Blyde River Canyon”

  Heidi, Pembury Tour Consultant

One look and it’s easy to understand why. God’s Window is situated on the edge of Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga, also known as Paradise Country. Named for its breathtaking panoramic views of the Lowveld and canyon, it’s easy to see why some call it the best view in South Africa. Giving visitors a view of striking rock formations, beautiful waterfalls, and the Lebombo Mountains, it is undeniably one of South Africa’s most beautiful regions.  On a clear day, the Kruger Park and Mozambique coastline can be spotted.

Blyde River Canyon is the largest vegetated canyon in the world and is third in size only to the Grand Canyon and the Fish River Canyon. There are several viewing points and hiking trails along the canyon.  If you’re after truly magnificent views, avoid the crowds and hike through the rainforest for views above the clouds. Wonder View, just 2km north of God’s Window, is the highest viewpoint in the region and guarantees to take your breath away.

A few tips from Heidi for hiking along the Blyde River Canyon:

  • Prepare for steep walks if you want the best views
  • Expect humid weather
  • Take plenty of water (and snacks if you’re prone to getting peckish!)
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes
  • Take spending money for the curio shops
