4 ALTERNATIVES TO GORILLA TREKKING IN RWANDA
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is undoubtedly one of Africa’s most sought-after safari experiences. We have to admit, there are few experiences that can compare to seeing the peaceful, endangered Mountain Gorilla in its natural habitat. Tranquil and gentle, these shy creatures are a far cry from the aggressive depiction they received in King Kong.
Gorilla trekking is an incredibly rewarding wildlife experience and a bucket list item for many safari enthusiasts. However, it might not always be possible. Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda currently cost $1,500 per person, making for quite a steep price tag! But, hope is not lost! Africa has a few tricks up her sleeve to ensure you have a magical vacation regardless. Here are four alternatives to gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

2. Gorilla Trekking in the Republic of Congo
Western Lowland gorillas are the lesser-known relatives of Uganda and Rwanda’s Mountain Gorillas. Found in the Odzala National Park in the Republic of Congo, an excursion to these gorillas is the perfect alternative to gorilla trekking in Rwanda. They are similar to their mountain cousins but are more active and enjoy climbing trees.
Odzala Ngaga Camp is a fantastic eco-lodge home to a passionate research team who lead guided gorilla treks. Of the three groups of habituated gorillas, two can be easily reached with a short 8km walk from the lodge. There are no mountains to hike which is great news for those who are averse to steep hills!

3. Monkey Trekking in Rwanda
The gorillas often steal the primate spotlight. However, Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to a variety of monkey species which hold their own as an alternative to gorilla trekking. You can trek a number of unusual and exotic species, such as the chimpanzee, Grey-Cheeked Mangabey, Black and White Colobus, Blue monkey and Golden monkey. All are equally special to see swinging and sitting in the canopy of green trees that form the forest, and at a fraction of the cost of gorilla trekking.

4. Chimpanzee Trekking in Tanzania
If you are looking to switch up your destination completely, then safari hotspot, Tanzania, also offers great alternative primate encounters than gorilla trekking. In western Tanzania, set on Lake Tanganyikan, is Greystone Mahale Camp. The camp offers incredible up-close encounters with chimpanzees in the remote and peaceful Mahale Mountains National Park.
Approximately 1,700 chimps call the forest home, but you’ll see the 60-strong Mimikere troop who is well habituated to humans. It is a life-changing experience, trekking the chimps through the forest, hearing only their sounds before suddenly, they are everywhere.
