ELEPHANT VS. FOOTBALL FANS

Why We Aren’t That Different

Elephants are one of the most fascinating and beautiful species on the planet. In 1930, there were 10 million wild elephants wild elephants in Africa. As of 2018, there are only 415000. Other than poaching, one of the biggest contributors to their decline in number is conflict with humans.

As self-proclaimed elephant lovers, Pembury Tours thought we’d take a closer look at these wonderful animals. We discovered that we aren’t that different after all.

“If anyone wants to know what elephants are like, they are like people only more so. “

– Peter Corneille

1. Drinking

One elephant can outdrink 350 football fans (in terms of litres, not beer!)

The average football fan in the UK drinks about 7 pints a week. This is equivalent to about 4 litres of beer a week. The average Elephant Bull drinks 200 litres of water a day or 1400 litres a week.  High tolerance or not, there is no out-drinking an elephant.

2. Lefties and Righties

Just like people are either left or right-handed, elephants are the same with their tusks. Elephants have a preferred tusk for fighting, picking things up or removing leaves from trees.

3.  Hugs

People tend to greet each other with hugs, handshakes or kisses. Elephants do the same – they either use their trunks to give ‘hugs’ or friendly taps on the body.

4. Grief

Elephants grieve their lost ones, just like we do.  They pay respect to their dead by touching their skulls and tusks with their trunks and feet. If passing by a place where a herd member died, they will stop and have a moment of silence.

5. The Art of Survival

Both elephants and humans are born without survival skills. Just like we learn from our parents, elephants learn from their elders about how to survive.
