On the north-west border of Botswana is a spectacular wilderness of expansive savannahs, baobab trees, ancient woodland and flood plains. Chobe National Park is one Africa’s most special safari destinations.
It is home to the greatest concentration of game in the entire southern African subcontinent and has over 460 bird species (birdwatchers – this is a spot for you!). The Chobe River is famous for its incredible game viewing with large herds of elephants and buffalo visiting the river to drink.
We love to send visitors to this wonderful place which naturally means we have a few top spots for them to stay. Here are our favourite places to stay in Chobe National Park:
1. Muchenje Safari Lodge, Chobe National Park
Muchenje Safari Lodge is situated on an escarpment of the park with beautiful views of the Chobe River, Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and the seasonal floodplains. Being owner-run and managed, it is a truly personalised safari experience. It is the ultimate spot for a truly relaxing and immersive safari. Being located far away from the bustling Kasane, guests enjoy game drives and boat cruises in a rarely visited section of the park. The lodge is in the Chobe Forest Reserve which means game walks and night drives are also available, adding to the immersive experience. With only 11 guest rooms, it also has a wonderfully exclusive feel.
2. Bakwena Lodge, Chobe National Park
On the banks of the Chobe River is Bakwena Lodge. An intimate, privately-owned eco-lodge, Bakwena offers a cool and comfortable retreat, working in harmony with the natural surroundings. Combining luxury with an eco-friendly approach, the lodge focuses on a natural safari experience. An inclusive safari options allows for some of the finest game viewing. Whilst activities like water-based safaris, fishing trips and sundowner cruises all add to the luxurious feel.
3. Sanctuary Retreats – Chobe Chilwero
The name says it all – Chobe Chilwero is the ultimate luxurious retreat into the heart of the bush. It sits above Chobe River which means it has breath-taking panoramic views across the islands and floodplains as distant as Namibia. The game viewing is also incredible. It offers a truly exclusive and elegant safari experience which is why it’s one of our top places to stay in Chobe. The only full spa among the Botswana safari lodges, a split-level swimming pool and gourmet cuisine all add to the luxury feel of the camp.
4. Camp Linyati
A hidden gem, Camp Linyati, an authentic, charming and elegant safari lodges, is one of our favourite places to stay in Chobe. The camp is situated in its own private area on the Linyati River with incredible view of this water filled and game-rich area. The focus lies on bringing these views to the guests with a perfectly positioned bar, lounge and dining area and extensive wooden decks. It is the perfect spot to sit back and watch the beauty of the bush play out in front of you.
5. Elephant Valley Lodge
Elephant Valley Lodge lies beneath a forest of African thorn trees overlooking a waterhole. With open-air guest areas, outdoor dining and an infinity swimming pool with views of the waterhole, it is the one of perfect places to stay in Chobe if you want to relax and reconnect with nature. The luxury safari tents are situated along the edge of the valley or in the garden so that you fall asleep listening to the multitude of the African bush’s night sounds. With game drives, river boat cruises and being only an hour away from Victoria Falls, it’s a wonderful place to have a safari experience.
