Tanzania is without a doubt one of East Africa’s top holiday destinations. The country has everything you could want from an African experience – incredible safari experiences, amazing wildlife, extraordinary scenery and beautiful white-sand beaches.

Along with this, there is no shortage of adventure activities for all you adventurous spirits. From land to sea to skiesfrom forest to islands to mountains, there is always an adventure waiting just around the corner.

Here are our top adventure activities in Tanzania.

1. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

Standing at 5895 metres tall (19300 feet), Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak on the African continent and the world’s tallest freestanding mountain. In other words, it’s the adventure-lover’s dream and the first of our favourite adventure activities in Tanzania.

Mount Kilimanjaro translates to ‘Mountain of Light’ or ‘Mountain of Greatness’, and we must admit that there is a certain allure to both. No doubt at some point you’ve seen a rather dramatic photograph of an elephant with Mount Kilimanjaro lying majestically in the background. It has what we call ‘adventure appeal’.

Don’t be intimated if you are not a seasoned hiker or adrenaline junkie, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in the world that can be hiked by tourists without previous mountaineering training or experience. It does, however, require five days, a solid level of fitness, a reasonably big budget, and a lot of determination. For those of you who have hiked, the mountain has many challenging trails and routes.

The hike is scenic, the summit spectacular, and the experience? Once-in-a-lifetime.

Best Time to Do It:

  • June to October

2. Hot Air Balloon Safari over the Serengeti

For some, this may be a stretch when it comes to adventure activities, However, we believe that anything involving a basket, giant balloon and gas burner that lifts you 1000 feet off the ground, is a pretty adventurous undertaking.

Hot air ballooning over the world-famous Serengeti is a phenomenal experience and undoubtedly one of the best adventure activities in Tanzania. As you rise above the plains of the Serengeti, you are faced with the overwhelming vastness and beauty of the landscape below. You’ll see elephants, zebras, giraffes and other game from above – a game viewing experience very few get to enjoy.

Those lucky or strategic enough for their visit to coincide with the Great Migration will witness the thousands of wildebeest and zebras crossing the plains from above.

Best Time to Do It:

  • Central Serengeti: Year-Round
  • Western Serengeti: June to October
  • Northern Serengeti: July to mid-November

3. Diving with Whale Sharks off Mafia Island

Going from the skies to the seas, off the coast of Tanzania lies an island perfect for spirited adventurers. Mafia Island is far off the beaten (or should we say sailed) track compared to its fellow East African islands.

The snorkeling and diving are incredible, but it is most famous for one of the most unique adventures in Tanzania – its whale shark encounters. The whale shark is the largest fish in the sea, measuring up to 1metres in length (32 feet). From October to February, adventurous divers can take to the sea and witness these gentle giants as they glide through the water.

The adventure element comes from venturing out to a small island and diving with the largest fish on the planet. It does not stem from the fact you are swimming with whale sharks – they are not Great Whites – they are not life-threatening; they are shy and gentle. It is a completely safe, unique and awe-inspiring experience.

Best Time to Do It:

  • October to February

4. A Walking Safari in Selous

One of the most exciting and rewarding safari experiences is a walking safari. It is immersive, interesting and full of anticipation as you walk in search of Africa’s wonderful wildlife.

Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve is one of the country’s most protected areas and one of the top spots to do this. The focus is on walking safaris – helping guests discover the landscape the way the original adventurers did – on foot.

Led by an experienced and knowledgeable guide, your adrenaline will start to rush, and the anticipation will increase as you come close to a herd of elephant or giraffe, realising for the first time how truly big and magnificent they are. If you’re lucky, you might encounter the wild dog. If you’re even luckier, you’ll see the endangered black rhino.

Best Time to Do It:

  • Late June to October

5. Chimpanzee Trekking

We will be the first to admit, we talk a lot about gorilla trekking on our blog, those gentle giants have just stolen our hearts! But we don’t want to forget about their fellow primates – the chimpanzee. Which brings us to the last of our favourite adventure activities in Tanzania.

Running from the peak of the Mahale Mountains to the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, lies a forest.  And this forest is home to a thriving population of chimpanzees. If you are in search of unusual adventure off the beaten track, then chimpanzee trekking in this outer wilderness of Tanzania is for youRemote and uncluttered by tourists, it is an original adventure. The time you spend in search of the Mahale chimps is thrilling and suspenseful as you walk through the forest, past streams, waterfalls, trees, following the echoes of chimp calls.

The time you spend close to them is life-changing, as you observe them feeding, playing and sometimes fighting in their natural habitat. They are habituated so you will get to see them live as they do naturally in the wild – a rare and special experience.
