POST COVID-19 TRAVEL
7 WAYS TO BE A BETTER TRAVELLER
It is difficult to imagine travel once restrictions are lifted and movement increases post COVID-19. What we do know for certain is that things are going to be different. And in the bid to be ever optimistic, we at Pembury Tours believe many of those differences are going to be good. Coronavirus has shown us that the planet cannot continue to support our care-free, fast-paced and country-hopping lifestyles. It is also likely that we will have a different approach to how we travel. We believe that this is a wonderful opportunity to rejoin the world in a more gentle and mindful manner. Many of us have realised we need to live more sustainably and thoughtfully in our daily lives; and we believe we will change how we travel to align with these new shifts in lifestyle. This is the planet giving us a fresh start to travel better, more meaningfully and more positively for ourselves, the communities we visit and the nature world too.
Here are 7 ways you can be a better traveller post COVID-19.

1. Choose Your Destination Wisely
With a shift in our approach to travel, it is likely our destination choices will shift too. The best destinations to visit post COVID-19 will be those that have adapted to the new tourist landscape and offer authentic holidays without harm. Supporting a destination that works towards the protection of our planet in any way or form – combatting climate change, conserving local wildlife, uplifting local communities – as a good way to be a better traveller when you do travel again. Africa, luckily, is home to many such destinations, who rely on tourism to protect their wildlife, conserve their ecology and uplift their local communities – think gorilla trekking in Rwanda or the Maasai guides in Kenya and Tanzania.

2. Choose Sustainable Accommodation
If we are aiming to travel for sustainably then it makes sense that the best places to stay are those rooted in community. Safari lodges, guest houses or hotels that are smaller, locally-owned and community-based tend to operate more sustainably and authentically because they have a deeper connection with their surroundings and local eco-system. Knowing that you’re staying somewhere that makes use of solar power, recycling, greywater systems or plastic-free systems, takes a lot of ‘green travel weight’ off your shoulders and is an easy way to be a better traveller.

3. Think About the Animals
Humans have a tendency to focus on humans and forget about all the other living creatures with which we share our planet. Wildlife throughout the world has suffered drastically due to our fast-paced, fast-growing lifestyle and care-free travel habits. Wild animals have become the subject of once-in-a-lifetime travel selfies without consideration of the distress it causes them. Wild animals should have as little interference from humans as possible. However, these animals are being taken from the wild and are often mistreated so that they remain docile. If you are wanting to be a better traveller then always do your research before booking any tour or activity involving animals – animals can be watched from afar but should never be touched or ridden.
Our top recommended ethical animal interactions in Africa include: gorilla trekking and a visit to Giraffe Manor.

4. Fly Less
The grounding of planes has led to significant decreases in air and noise pollution. Air travel is likely to be very different with long queues, health checks and higher prices. Many airlines are already restructuring the design of their planes, developing ways to prioritise their staff’s wellbeing, and using technology to make air travel greener and healthier. ‘Flight Shame’ has come to light in 2020 as climate-change activists have highlighted the negative impact flying has on the environment. If possible, book a direct flight to your destination. If you can reduce the number of flights you take, you can reduce your carbon footprint. Avoiding flying when possible is one of the best ways to become a better traveler.

5. Adopt the Concept of Slow Travel
Knowing that air travel will never be the same, this is the perfect opportunity to embrace “Slow Travel”. It is an emerging trend – encouraging travel to fewer places, spending more time at each. Slow travel is all about reducing pace and focusing on the journey. It is a remedy to the fast-paced, stress-filled lives we lead – counteracting jam-packed days with slow-paced, quality-centric holidays. Travelling by train or boat or even bicycle are the perfect solutions to travelling slowly and ever the proof that the journey is as important as the destination.

6. Think Locally
This new way of travel provides an opportunity for tourists and locals to create more mutually beneficial relationships with a more symbiotic exchange of skills, knowledge, money and experiences. We often come away from holidays feeling enriched, and so should the communities we visit – local communities should be left feeling enriched, not depleted by tourism.

7. Aim for Low-Volume Tourism
People are going to move around the planet less and be more selective in their travel which is a wonderful upside for the issue of overtourism. Aim for low-volume tourist destinations – not only are these better for preserving the local environment but also provide a chance to escape the crowds and reconnect with nature. A safari is a prime example of low-volume, high-value tourism – few people are involved, the environment and wildlife considered throughout and the experience one like no other.
