Client Review

This is the 2nd time we have used Pembury Tours to arrange some of our travel in South Africa. The first time was with work group but this time I returned with my partner. I am trying to recreate the special trip Pembury made possible but to be honest I was  failing when it came to organising the Safari. We asked for a few different safari options so that we could see what would make the most sense for us. Tammy offered some really good ideas and it was difficult to choose which option we wanted.     Luckily Tammy was able to set out first hand the pros and cons of each accommodation and we made the right choice in the end. I can recommend Pembury Tours to anyone.

Sandy & Arnold

Tour Consultant's Overview

Sandy contacted me while already travelling in South Africa. This was not her first trip to our country or on a tour organised by Pembury. She had visited a few years before as part of a group travelling for business. She had fallen in love with our beautiful country and wanted to return – but on holiday this time. Although Sandy had planned the rest of her trip on her own, she was having a really tough time planning the safari portion of the trip as everything seemed out of reach price wise.  She contacted us to see if we could work our magic and we did!

Timbavati Game Reserve: Umlani Bush Camp

Umlani is located in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, which shares an unfenced border with the Kruger National Park. This is true Big Five territory and guests have an opportunity to see lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino on safe, expertly guided game drives and bush walks. The area is also home to more than 40 mammal species and 350 bird species.

All accommodation options have en-suite facilities including open-air bush showers for the ultimate stargazing experience. They also offer comfortable beds, crisp white linen, soft towels, mosquito netting, insect repellent and standard bathroom amenities. There is also complimentary bottled water, although the tap water is perfectly safe to drink.

The Umlani philosophy of simplistic luxury and 'getting back to nature' is enhanced by the romance of operating without electricity, so each hut and the entire camp is lit by candlelight and oil lamps, providing a warm and magical atmosphere.

Sabi Sand Game Reserve: Elephant Plains Game Lodge

Situated in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, part of the 2.2 million hectare Greater Kruger National Park, Elephant Plains offers comfortable style and affordable luxury. The lodge overlooks a waterhole on the banks of the Manyeleti River and the pool deck guarantees excellent viewing of animals moving from the plains to drink. Elephant Plains is proud of the standard of its tasty international cuisine and South African specialities. Breakfast and lunch are enjoyed in the dining room or on the pool deck, overlooking the open area. Dinner is served around a log fire in the boma, whilst enjoying the mystical nocturnal sounds under the African sky. There are two swimming pools, and an African Spa.

Accommodation is provided in six luxury suites, five rondavels and one honeymoon suite. Decorated in warm, earthy tones, the natural design and architectural flow of the six glass-fronted luxury suites fall softly on the eye. These exclusive, open-plan suites each have a lounge, double bedroom, en-suite bathroom and a private viewing deck that offers spectacular views over the riverbed and open area. The five rondavels are set in the beautifully landscaped garden of the original family holiday camp and one can still feel the old bushveld charm upon entering. The five rondavels have been renovated and redecorated and have sundecks and en-suite bathrooms.

The Manyeleti honeymoon suite provides honeymooners, or guests that are just romantic at heart, with elegance, privacy and a stunning view. This glass fronted suite has all the regular luxuries and also boasts a private splash pool and daybed, ideal for a mid-morning nap. All accommodation is air-conditioned.

Included in price Timbavati Game Reserve: Daily Safari Programme at Umlani Bush Camp

At Umlani you will enjoy two game drives per day, in open top four wheel drive vehicles. The morning game drive will leave at dawn and the night drive will leave in the late afternoon. There is always a ranger on stand-by for an optional morning bush walk.

During the day you can go on short walks with the ranger after breakfast, or lounge in the hammocks around the swimming pool sipping your favourite drink. Alternatively, laze away the day in the spacious bush bar and deck overlooking the riverbed and watering hole.

For exclusive tranquillity there is a tree house about 2.5km from the camp overlooking a dam, where you can be left for an hour or two with blankets and big comfortable pillows as well as a cooler box with drinks.

In the evening you will be treated to pre-dinner drinks in the traditional boma around the fire, followed by one of Umlani's award winning meals in the candlelit dining room, or out in the open riverbed surrounded by flares and cauldron fires.

The Timbavati is brimming with various species of fowl and beast, including the sought-after Big Five, namely lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. The reserve also boasts over 40 other species of mammals. Creatures of every shape and size abound during the day, and by night visitors to the reserve are likely to see smaller, nocturnal mammals - such as porcupines, servals, civets and genets. Bird-lovers would struggle to replicate this calibre of bird watching anywhere else in the world, with the Timbavati featuring over 360 different species.

Included in price Sabi Sand Game Reserve: Daily Safari Programme at Elephant Plains Game Lodge

Upon arrival at your safari lodge you are given a welcome drink and your safari experience will be explained to you by your lodge host. There will be time to settle in before afternoon High Tea followed by your first game drive. Game drives take place in the early morning and evening to ensure game viewing when animals are most active. Night game drives provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the predators, particularly the leopard for which this area is renowned. You return to your lodge in time for a sumptuous safari cuisine dinner. The next day after a light snack you are taken on a morning game drive. You return to the lodge for a grand brunch. There is time to relax around the sunny pool, do some bird-watching from the observation deck or read a book in the peace of your room’s private verandah.

If you are feeling more active, you can go on a bush walk with your ranger. After High Tea you set off on another evening game drive, returning again in time for dinner. On your day of departure, you will do a morning game drive and will leave the lodge after brunch.
