Day 02 :
Cape Town

You have a few days to get the best out of this wonderful city and as you are self-driving you have a great deal of flexibility.

Cape Town has so much to offer and you are able to start exploring this area tomorrow. From the oldest buildings in South Africa to trendy waterfront shopping; from majestic Table Mountain to sun drenched beaches; and from dramatic seascapes to verdant vineyards. Cape Town regularly tops many lists of world must-visit destinations and Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain has recently been voted one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Cosmopolitan and fashionable, the relaxed atmosphere and pavement café culture give Cape Town a Southern European feel – but with a distinctive African twist.

You check out after breakfast and make your way to the heart of the Cape Winelands, with its backdrop of majestic mountain ranges, lush valleys and verdant vineyards. Many of the nearby wine estates in the area offer informative guided wine-tastings to the public as well as cellar tours or tours of the vineyards. Some of them also make cheese, chocolate and olive oil and offer tastings of these products alongside their wines. Many also have on-site restaurants offering food that ranges from gastronomical delights to picnic hampers to enjoy under the oak trees.

After a full day of exploring the various Wine Routes and enjoying wine tastings along the way, you make your way to Franschhoek where you check in for your overnight stay.

The village of Franschhoek is at the heart of the Franschhoek Wine Route and is surrounded by craggy mountains and verdant vineyards. Many of the 42 wine estates on the Franschhoek Wine Route offer informative guided wine-tastings to the public as well as cellar tours or tours of the vineyards. Some of them also make cheese, chocolate and olive oil and offer tastings of these products alongside their wines. Many of them have on-site restaurants offering food that ranges from gastronomical delights to picnic hampers to enjoy under the oak trees. There is a hop-on hop- off Wine Tram, which visits some of these estates. Franschhoek village, South Africa’s “French Corner”, has a distinct French feel and is undoubtedly South Africa’s gourmet capital, with several of South Africa’s Top Ten restaurants. It is also filled with quirky shops.

Enjoy breakfast this morning before you check out and depart Cape Town and head to Oudtshoorn for an overnight stay. The drive takes you through an area of magnificent landscapes and towering cliffs, crystal clear streams and an abundance of trees and indigenous flora – offering a diverse region and a kaleidoscope of scenic tranquility.

The town of Oudtshoorn area is situated in the Klein Karoo between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains and is the ostrich capital of the world. The world’s biggest bird is just one of the many attractions in this area of exceptional contrasts and natural beauty. The region is home to the spectacular Cango Caves, Africa’s largest show cave system; an ecological hotspot where three distinct plant biomes (succulent karoo, cape thicket and fynbos) converge; and the Swartberg mountain range, which is part of the Cape Floral World Heritage Site.

Driving time: Franschhoek to Oudtshoorn – approx. 4½ hours (direct drive)

You leave Oudtshoorn and the little Karoo behind and head over the magnificent Outeniqua Mountains. Drive through the towns of George and wilderness before reaching Knysna where you spend a few hours taking in some of the views of the Knysna Heads.

Driving time: Oudtshoorn to Knysna – approximately 1¾ hours (direct drive)

Day 07 :
Knysna

Knysna is a lovely little village and the perfect base to explore the garden route.

Set between the majestic Outeniqua mountains and the rugged Southern Cape Coastline, surrounded by forest, Knysna is built on the northern shore of a large warm-water estuary, known as the Knysna Lagoon. The lagoon is unique in that it features the only estuarine seahorses of its kind in the world and visitors are encouraged to scuba dive to see them. The Knysna Lagoon is one of the few places along the coast (and in the world) that supports an oyster hatchery, of which the oysters are reputed as being the tastiest in the world.

This unique mix of, water and forest, drop out and executive, tin shack and state–of-the-art architecture combines to make Knysna a fascinating town – one with a romantic history and a bright future. Knysna is one of the Garden Route’s best-known travel destinations and was recently named as one of the Top 100 Destinations in the World.

After breakfast you will continue your journey along the coast. Enjoy a scenic drive through Plettenberg Bay and The Craggs before reaching Tsitsikamma. Tsitsikamma is a Khoi word meaning “place of abundant or sparkling water”. The region stretches from the Bloukrans River in the west to Eerste Rivier in the east, is bordered on the north by the imposing Tsitsikamma Mountains and in the south by the Indian Ocean. The area is covered in large tracts of indigenous forest, commercial plantation and Fynbos. Deep river gorges cleft the plateau as they make their way down to the sea, creating spectacular waterfalls and deep kloofs. Continue through the Tsitsikamma towards Port Elizabeth and then inland to Lalibela Game Reserve where you enjoy a 3-night safari.

Upon arrival at Lalibela Game Reserve you are transferred from reception to your lodge, where you are given a welcome drink and your safari experience will be explained to you by your lodge host. There will be time to settle in before lunch followed by your first game drive.

Driving time: Knysna to Lalibela Game Reserve – approximately 4 hours

Lalibela Game Reserve is a 10,500-hectare malaria-free Big Five game reserve in the heart of Eastern Cape game country. Lalibela brings you the charm of authentic Africa and is a perfect blend of the formal and informal.
