POSTPONE, DON’T CANCEL

[/fusion_title][fusion_text]

HOW YOU CAN HELP SAVE THE TOURISM INDUSTRY

[/fusion_text][fusion_text]

We understand that planning a holiday, or even thinking about planning a holiday, might not be high on your agenda at the moment. And if you have a holiday booked that you’re due to go on relatively soon, your first instinct might well be to cancel. But simply postponing instead of cancelling is one of the kindest things you could do.

Travel is the last thing on most people’s minds at the moment, not only is it currently impossible but there are more important things to prioritise. However, for the 10% of the world’s population that work in the tourism industry, travel is very much on their minds. Right now, most of these people have lost their jobs suddenly and unexpectedly. Phones have stopped ringing, emails have stopped being sent, reservations are non-existent.

[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” dimension_margin=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_text]

It is easy to think of the tourism industry as one big amalgamation of big airline companies and tour operators, but it’s not just the flight attendants and travel agents – it’s the safari guide in Botswana, the housekeeping team at a small guesthouse, the owners of a small souvenir shop. These people need you more than ever. Without your support and sensitivity, these people are unlikely to be around when you travel again.

The United National World Tourism Organisation has stated that it is predicting as much as a 3% decline in global tourism due to COVID-19 outbreak. This translated to an estimated loss of up to $50 billion.

In Africa, tourism is a keystone pillar to the continent’ economy. In 2018, tourism contributed 8.5% ($194.2 billion) of the continent’s GDP. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, this pandemic could cause the loss of up to 50 million jobs and shrink the travel sector by 25% in 2020. Many African countries rely heavily on tourism for economic growth and survival.

In South Africa, for every 8 tourists, one permanent job is created. In Uganda, the tourism industry contributes $1.6 billion to Uganda’s earnings and employs 667,600 people. Statistics from 2019 show that gorilla tourism alone brought $19.2 million into Rwanda. Postponing will not only help people retain their jobs – there is a greater positive impact. Throughout Africa, tourism is key to growing sustainability, conserving the environment and protecting wildlife. Most safari lodges and game reserves all work towards the same goal – protecting Africa – her wildlife, her ecosystems, her communities.

The majority of tourism and travel products have adjusted their policies to ease the process of postponing and make sure you benefit from it – for example, you may only travel in 2021 but you will still pay 2020’s rates.

It gives you hope but it also gives hope to the people in the tourism industry you are helping.

The Pros of Postponing

  • Postponing means you can help other people keep their jobs during this time of crisis.
  • It gives you something to look forward to – according to a study in the journal of Applied Research in Quality of Life, planning or anticipating holidays can make you just as happy as taking them.
  • You’ve gone through the process of planning the perfect holiday, why let that hard work go to waste?
  • Travel products have adapted cancellation and booking policies so that you can defer your holiday without penalties.
  • It gives you something to look forward to and helps you see the light at the end of the tunnel.
