EARTH DAY 2020

[/fusion_title][fusion_text]

HOW TO CELEBRATE WHILE SOCIAL DISTANCING

If you had to ask anyone how they planned on celebrating Earth Day 2020, it is safe to say that their answer would not have involved staying at home sitting out a global pandemic.

However, this is the situation we find ourselves in. Humanity though, ever resourceful and ever optimistic, has managed to adapt reasonably quickly to this strange and unchartered territory of staying at home. Included in this, is the celebration of Earth Day.

Today, the 22nd April 2020, we celebrate Earth Day. This year’s theme is climate action – taking action against climate change. In no way making light of this global crisis, there is perhaps a positive we can draw from it – the chance our planet has been given to recover and take a breath

[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” link=”” target=”_self” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” hover_type=”none” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” border_position=”all” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” dimension_margin=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no”][fusion_text]

Globally, there is less industrial pollution, less noise pollution, less litter, less carbon emissions from carsNature is reclaiming its space, the Venice canals are running clear for the first time in years, goats are roaming streets in Wales, Japanese sika deer are walking the streets of Nara, to name a few. Here in South Africa, we’ve had penguins exploring Cape Town, a hippo wandering down the streets of KwaZulu Natal’s St Lucia and increased schools of sardines in our oceans. This is showing us how we need to reevaluate how we live, travel, work and treat our planet. We are being the opportunity to come out of this crisis and have a fresh start in how we address climate change, sustainability, conservation and our way of life in general.

This year, although we may not be able to join together in the physical world to celebrate Earth Day, we can join together digitally. Here are a few ways to celebrate Earth Day whilst practicing social distancing.

1. Spread the Word Socially

We don’t mean social in the usual sense, but rather in the digital sense. Now, more than ever, social media has become one of our primary means of socialising – remaining connected and supportive of each other. EarthDay.org, the official Earth Day platform has made a number of beautiful graphics available that you can download and post to twitter, Facebook or Instagram along with some fantastic captions, quotes and tweets to use.

2. Join Earth Day Live

Over 3 days, the 22nd to the 24th April, the Earth Day Network is going to host Earth Day Live. This is an online mobilsation to stop the climate emergency. You will be able to watch, discuss and participate in a livestream featuring stories, performances and opportunities for digital collective action. On Earth Day itself, you can watch live performances, messages and calls to action from a number of key figures streamed on earthday.org.

3. Share Your Air

This is a fantastic way to contribute without having to leave your house, in fact, all you need is a smartphone. The Wilson Center and U.S. State Department has partnered with the Earth Day Network to create a new air quality recording tool: the Earth Challenge 2020 app (EC2020). All you need to do is record images of your horizon which will be added to a global database of similar air quality recordings. These data points will create a global map of readings, showing the variation of air quality around the planet and how human activity shapes these trends.

4. Go ‘Plogging’

This only applies to you if you are living in a country where you are allowed to take walks or jogs while social distancing. Earth Day Network is encouraging plogging – the original solo cleanup. Plogging is a combination of Swedish words – plocka (to pick up) and jogg (to jog) – it represents the activity of exercising for personal health while collecting litter in the process. This Earth Day, if you are able, pick up litter on your daily jog or walk.

5. Create

There is a rather common saying that you cannot spell ‘Earth’ without ‘art’. Art is a powerful tool in creating awareness, conveying messages and connection on emotional levels. It is also a proven way to relieve stress and relieve mental exhaustion in the same way spending outdoors does. This year, you can contribute to Earth Day by joining Artists for the Earth. You can have your work, be it music, writing, photography, dance, theatre, film, art or any other medium, featured for Earth day. You can register events like exhibitions, projects or performancesIf you prefer to look at art, rather than create it, you can view the Artists for the Earth Gallery here

6. Eat a Plant-Based Meal

One of the biggest factors of climate change is our diets. Agriculture generally accounts for roughly 25% of all human greenhouse gas emissions, with animal agriculture being responsible for nearly 80% of these emissions. Animal agriculture also requires huge amounts of land and water – one pound of beef (½ kilogram) requires 1,800 gallons of water (6,800 liters). By simply cutting out meat from your diet, even once or twice a week, you can make a huge contribution to fighting climate change. The plant-based movement is growing rapidly so there is no shortage of delicious, simple and budget-friendly vegetarian or vegan recipes.

7. Take the Earth Day Challenge

Another fantastic initiative by the Earth Day Network is the Earth Day Daily Challenge. This is a 22-day series of daily challenges that encourage people to take action every day towards helping our planet. Some of the challenges include reading, instead of streaming, going plant-based for one meal a day for a week, fixing and DIY-ing instead of buying and composting waste. You can see all of the challenges if you follow Earth Day Network on Instagram.
