CHOCOLATE TASTING EXPERIENCES IN AFRICA
In celebration of World Chocolate Day – and Chocolate in general – we decided to explore a few Chocolate Tasting Experiences found in Africa. From South Africa to Ghana, an array of Chocolatiers and exquisite tastings await your arrival for an indulgent experience.
1.De Villiers Chocolate Tasting at Spice Route
Location: Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa.
Pieter De Villiers spent 25 years working in the engineering field; some could say it helps his success in becoming one of South Africa’s leading Chocolatiers. With a passion for local and artisanal food markets, Pieter decided to explore the world of chocolate. With this leap, he has crafted delicious and sustainable chocolate bars, coffee and ice cream.
De Villiers Chocolate is a taste sensation as each chocolate bar is different from the next. You can mix and match your chocolate flavours, all depending on your chocolate preference. We recommend you be bold and try a few unusual flavours during your tasting. Pair salty sea salt chocolate bars with citrusy orange chocolate bars. De Villiers Chocolate is located less than one hour from Cape Town, within the uniquely designed Spice Route.
Tastings are available daily between 09h00 – 16h30. Each tasting can be arranged with a selection of Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, no-added-sugar chocolate, or nut butter chocolate. The range of locally sourced and produced chocolate caters for all dietary preferences.
No one has to be left behind when visiting De Villiers Chocolate.
2.Afrochoc Tasting at Chocolate Factory
Location: Mulunguzi, Zomba, Malawi
Proudly Malawian, AfroChoc is made from pure cacao beans and infused with a range of flavours. Each chocolate is made with the richness of Belgian chocolate and a touch of African infused flavours. Laura Schuerwegen, the owner of AfroChoc, arrived in Malawi to find that there were no gourmet chocolate shops around. And what happens when we do not find gourmet chocolates?
In Laura’s case, make your own!
Each chocolate bar has been carefully thought through and created with determination and hard work. Not only has AfroChoc created great awareness of gourmet chocolate in the country, but it is created many jobs for local and aspiring chocolatiers. The Chocolate Factory is located within the quiet residential area of Mulunguzi and is a short walk from the historic central and botanical gardens of Zomba. The Chocolate Factory features three beautifully appointed rooms, so you are never far away from the chocolate magic!

6.Chocoloza in the city of gold – Johannesburg
Location: Braamfontein, Gauteng, South Africa
Founded by Vicki Bain, who used her living experience in Belgium and roots in Africa to create the exceptional treat, Chocoloza is a quirky and professional Chocolate Lounge located in the up-and-coming suburb of Braamfontein, Johannesburg. The brand was developed when Vicki felt homesick during her time in Belgian. With all the exceptional chocolate around her, she decided to incorporate the two countries and voilà, Chocoloza was created.

The name of each chocolate truffle is given based on its inspiration – which is drawn from different countries around Africa. Once the chocolate has its inspiration infused, the final touches of elegant artwork is placed on each chocolate to create a feast for the eyes and not only the tummy.
Located in Ghana’s capital, Accra, the store offers a range of chocolate truffles to purchase or enjoy as a tasting.
