5 SAFARIS WE KEEP DREAMING OF

Going on safaris and planning safaris is a part of who we are here at Pembury. Right now, while we’re in lockdown, we can’t help but drift off in daydreams of the Serengeti, Maasai Mara and Kruger National Park, to name a few.

For many of us, the reality of being at home is starting to kick in and there is nothing wrong with a little bit of escapism. We can’t help but dream of the time when we can go on safari again – thrilling game drives, drinking sundowners while watching the spectacular African sunsets, and reconnecting with nature.

Some of you may have had to cancel or postpone your safari because of the COVID-19 pandemic, or perhaps you’ve always dreamed of going on one. Either way, here are five safaris that we keep dreaming of, perhaps they’ll inspire you to choose Africa as the first place you travel to when we emerge from the crisis.

11-DAY CAPE TOWN, GARDEN ROUTE, BIG 5 SAFARI (SELF-DRIVE)

FROM £1,058 / $1,318 PER PERSON

This tour is one of our bestsellers, in fact, it has been featured as one of Africa’s top 10 safaris by Travel Mag. Perhaps because it combines a classic safari with a scenic road trip and the cosmopolitan, beloved Cape Town, it also happens to be a malaria-free safari. You start your South African adventure in the buzzing Cape Town. Spending four days in the Mother City gives you plenty of time to take in everything that makes the city special. You can explore sun-drenched beaches, visit the iconic Table Mountain and Robben Island, tour the stunning Cape Winelands, and indulge in the fantastic food scene. The anticipation of your safari builds as you drive through the breathtakingly beautiful and lush Garden Route. Your magical adventure ends with three nights at Lalibela Game Reserve where an experienced game ranger will take you on thrilling game drives where you’ll encounter the mighty Big Five.

16 DAY GORILLA TREKKING, MAASAI MARA,  SERENGETI AND ZANZIBAR SAFARI

FROM £7,920 / $9,863

You can’t get a more classic safari than the Maasai Mara and Serengeti. However, this already incredible experience is elevated by an intimate, life-changing gorilla trek in Rwanda and the chance to relax on the white-sand beaches of Zanzibar. You’ll start this East African adventure with two days in Kigali. The capital of Rwanda is considered the friendliest and safest of the African capitals. You will then drive through the beautiful green rolling hills, bypassing coffee and banana plantations, to Volcanoes National Park where you’ll embark on two of the most special safari experiences in existence – a gorilla trek and a golden monkey trek. You then move on to marvel at the spectacular Maasai Mara, enjoying some of the continent’s best game drives. The next step of the journey is 2 nights at the world-famous Serengeti with its endless plains, millions of large herbivores and a large lion population. The last stretch of the adventure allows you to unwind from the excitement and adventure of your safari. You’ll wind up your African safari with 3 nights on the island of Zanzibar with its azure oceans, white-sand beaches and spice-infused air.

9 DAY KRUGER NATIONAL PARK SAFARI

FROM £ 2,888 / $3,612 PER PERSON

The Kruger National Park is one of the most world-famous safari destinations. This ultimate Kruger safari begins with 3 days in the Kruger National Park itself. The wildlife experience is second to none. It is nearly two million hectares, the largest game reserve in South Africa, and unrivalled in its diversity of species. Your Kruger safari then continues with 3 nights in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Forming part of the Greater Kruger National Park, the Sabi Sand Reserve offers an exceptionally personalised safari experience with guaranteed close encounters with the wildlife, include the usually elusive leopard, lion, rhino, elephant and buffalo. Your South African safari comes to an end with 3 nights at Timbavati Game Reserve.

7 DAY VICTORIA FALLS & BOTSWANA SAFARI

FROM £ 3,062 / $3,830 PER PERSON

This is the perfect safari if you only have limited time but don’t want to compromise on having the ultimate safari experience. You start your one-week safari adventure with 2 nights at the mighty Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and a World Heritage Site. It is also the unchallenged adventure capital of Africa, so if you’re an adrenaline junkie, then this is the perfect safari for you. You’ll then move on to Botswana’s Chobe Game Reserve with its pristine wilderness, open plains, baobab trees, ancient woodland, swamps and flood plains. It is home to the greatest concentration of game in the entire southern African subcontinent and one of Africa’s most beautiful rivers. A highlight of your time here is a river cruise along the Chobe River which brings you up close with hippos, crocodiles and a wide array of water birds. This seven-day safari concludes in the iconic Okavango Delta, another World Heritage Site. With its richly diverse wildlife species and fantastic water-based safaris, is the perfect end to a short but spectacular safari.

12 DAY COMPLETE NAMIBIAN HIGHLIGHTS SAFARI

FROM £ 3,646 / $4,560 PER PERSON

Namibia flies under the radar when it comes to other safari hotspots. However, the arid landscapes make for a unique and awe-inspiring safari experience. Home to the oldest desert in the world and the only desert to be influenced by fog, there is a mystery that hangs in the air of this quiet and peaceful country. This safari allows you to explore the magic of Namibia over 12 days. You begin in Etosha National Park. This is one of Africa’s great game reserves and offers unique game viewing with its unique landscape – dry, white and vast. You then leave the flat, dry Etosha for the central highlands – Namibia’s backbone of mountains and rolling hills that divide the coastal desert regions and higher interior. You will stay in the Erongo Wilderness Conservancy where you can take guided bush walks and scenic game drives. The Namibian safari continues to Swakopmund, the jewel of Namibia’s coastline, and has built a reputation as an adrenaline-filled destination, sure to satisfy your every whim. The Namib dunes surrounding Swakopmund are some of the highest in the world. You then move on to the Sossusvlei, easily Namibia’s most spectacular destination. Home to some of the world’s largest sand dunes, it is a spectacular array of orange, burgundy, red and golden hues. This incredible safari concludes with visits to the Fish River Canyon, the world’s second-largest canyon after the Grand Canyon, and one night in the Kalahari.
